Janning Leads Bluejays with 22
Omaha, Neb. -- Four Bluejays finished in double figures, led by a game-high 22 from senior Marissa Janning, the Creighton women's basketball squad bested Nebraska 80-64 on Sunday, Dec. 18.
The win pushed Creighton to 5-4 on the season, while Nebraska moved to 4-7 overall.
The first quarter saw the two squads feel each other out as both the Huskers and the Bluejays held small leads, yet the Bluejays showed signs of things to come as trailing 4-2 the Bluejays knocked down back-to-back treys to seize the lead at 8-4 (6:03). Janning, senior Lauren Works and junior Sydney Lamberty delivered from long range in the quarter, yet Nebraska held a 15-14 edge at the break.
After giving up the first bucket of the second, the Bluejays took control with a 19-4 run over the next seven minutes.
Creighton's rally began with a give and go layup between Janning and fellow senior Brianna Rollerson. Lamberty followed with a traditional three-point play to put the Bluejays up 19-17. Nebraska got two free throws from Jessica Shepard to pull even, but Creighton scored the next eight.
Janning got the roll started with one of her seven treys in the game, while junior Kylie Brown added a free throw. With 5:28 remaining in the period, one of the turning points in the game unfolded. Bluejay freshman Jaylyn Agnew stripped the ball from Husker Nicea Eilely near mid-court and went to the rim. Agnew finished the layup strong, but was fouled hard by Nebraska's Jasmine Cincore. Up 37-25 with just under 90 seconds left in the half, the Bluejays put their stamp on the second with two more deep balls from Janning and Faber, following by a free throw from senior MC McGrory to push their edge to 44-25. A heave from Shepard as the buzzer sounded sent the teams to the locker room with the Bluejays up 44-28 at the half.
After outscoring Nebraska 30-13 in the second quarter, the Bluejays continued to fire away from long range in the third period as Creighton hit 6-of-13 from long range in the third to push their advantage to 26 at 68-42 heading into the final frame.
The Bluejays maintained a 20+ point lead into the closing moments of the fourth, but Nebraska closed the game on an 11-2 run to make the final 80-64.
