Omaha, Neb. -- Behind a career-tying five-inning performance from junior Austin Groth, the Creighton Baseball team bested Nebraska-Omaha 2-1 on Tuesday, May 17.
The victory pushed the Bluejays to 34-13 on the season, while UNO fell to 26-25.
Taking the mound for the first time since April 13, Groth limited the Mavericks to one unearned run on two hits and two walks over five innings to earn his first win (1-0) since the 2014 season.
Nebraska-Omaha, however, got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Cole Gruber drew a one-out walk. With two outs in the frame the speedy center fielder stole second, and then took third three pitches later. The throw to third from catcher Michael Emodi sailed into left field, allowing Gruber to scamper home.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when the Bluejays seized the lead for good. Senior Brett Murray opened the inning with a single through the right side, then senior Matt Gandy connected on a single to center. Junior Kevin Connolly loaded the bags without an out as he beat out a bunt to the left side of the infield. Junior Bryce Only followed with an RBI single to left to tie the game. Emodi brought in Gandy with a ground ball double-play, to provide the final run of the game.
Groth gave way to the Bluejay bullpen in the sixth. Junior Jeff Albrecht worked a scoreless inning, then junior Sam Norman got two outs and sophomore Ethan DeCaster nabbed his second save of the season with the final seven outs of the contest.
Gandy and junior Nicky Lopez closed the game with two hits each as Creighton collected 11 hits in the game.
Creighton continues its day/night doubleheader at 6:30 pm as the Bluejays battle Nebraska in the final home game of the regular season.
