Vermillion, S.D. -- The Creighton women's soccer team fell to 0-4-0 on the season as the Bluejays suffered a 1-0 loss to South Dakota in overtime on Thursday, Aug. 31. South Dakota moved to 1-4-0 with the win.
Expected to be a defensive battle, the contest played out in that manner throughout the first half. South Dakota held a slight edge at the break six shots to three.
Head coach Ross Paule and the Bluejays halftime adjustments injected more offensive energy as Creighton fired off 10 shots in the second period. The best shot for a goal came midway through the second period as sophomore Callie Hawkins fired from 30 yards away. Her shot glanced off the top half of the crossbar, bouncing out of bounds. Another bright spot was the play of sophomore Hannah Miller as each of her three shots were on frame, but South Dakota goalkeeper Coral Suarez was equal to the challenge.
The extra period lasted just over a minute as Taryn LaBree blasted a crossing shot from 12 yards away on the left side past Creighton goalkeeper McKenzie Meola. Coyote midfielder Kellee Willer picked up the assist, sending the ball from outside the top of the box.
The Coyote victory was the first win for South Dakota over Creighton in 11 meetings, the Bluejays enter the contest with wins in each of the previous 10 clashes.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 3 as the Bluejays open their home schedule against South Dakota State at 1:00 pm.
