Omaha, Neb. -- Trailing 1-0 early in the first period, the Creighton women's soccer team battled UMKC to a 2-2 tie on Friday, Sept. 8 in the opening match of Creighton's sixth annual Socctoberfest celebration.
The Bluejays moved to 0-5-1 following Friday's action, while UMKC went to 2-4-1 on the season.
The Roos notched the first goal of the match in the third minute via the counter attack. Gathering the ball on their defensive end, Kelsey Mothershead fielded a long pass from her defense then dribbled by two Bluejays. A sharp centering pass found Kara Priest in the center of the box for a goal. It was the first time this season the Bluejays had surrendered a first half goal.
Creighton responded in the 25th minute off the junior Kaira Houser. Senior Mackenzie Graybill got the attack rolling from near midfield with a long pass to freshman Keelie Fothergill, who quickly touched a pass to Houser on the outside. The Kansas native blasted a shot to the upper corner from 20 yards to knot the match at 1-1.
Just over two minutes later the Bluejays surged ahead as sophomore Taryn Jakubowski split three defenders and fired in a goal from 25 yards away. The goal came in the 28th minute, with 27:09 showing on the clock.
The Bluejays held the 2-1 lead into halftime and had a chance to extend their advantage as Houser earned a penalty kick in the 52nd minute. Her attempt, however, went just over the crossbar to keep it a one goal Creighton lead.
UMKC took advantage of the opening in the 77th minute as Abby Small knocked home a third shot attempt from 10 yards away. Mothershead started the flurry with a shot of the post, then Lexie Howard blasted a shot off the hands of Creighton goalkeeper McKenzie Meola. The bounce landed just in front of Small, resulting in the equalizer.
The Roos outshot the Bluejays 18-13 in the match, including a 12-7 edge after halftime.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 10 as the Bluejays head to Manhattan, Kansas to take on Kansas State at 1:00 pm.
