Indianapolis, Ind. -- Trailing by as much as 21 points midway through the second quarter, the Creighton women's basketball team fought back within four before falling to Butler, 59-53, on Friday, Jan. 19.Â
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 10-8 on the season and 4-4 in BIG EAST play, while Butler moved to 12-8 overall and 4-4 in conference action.
The opening frame got off to a snail's start for Creighton, falling behind 22-5 with just under two minutes left in the frame. The Bluejays closed the quarter with consecutive buckets from junior Audrey Faber and freshman Temi Carda to head to the second down 22-9.
Butler continued its torrid pace in the first four minutes of the second, extending Creighton's deficit to 21 at 34-13 with 5:53 left. A pull-up jumper from sophomore Olivia Elger got the Bluejays started on the comeback trail. Faber followed suit with back-to-back buckets in the paint as Creighton closed the half with a 14-4 run to go into the locker room down 38-27.
Coming back onto the floor the Bluejays got a trifecta from senior Bailey Norby, then consecutive layups from Carda and Norby to get within four at 38-34 (8:37). The Bluejay offense, however, stalled as Creighton did not score again until the clock read 3:26. A five-point burst from Faber brought Creighton back within five at 44-39, but Butler was able to keep the Jays at arm's length to take a 48-39 edge into the fourth.Â
The final period saw both teams struggle from the field as Creighton went 5-of-14 (35.7%) and Butler was a shade worse at 4-of-14 (28.6%). The shooting struggles allowed the Bulldogs to hold Creighton off to collect the win.
Faber led the Bluejays with 17 points in the loss, while Elger finished with 12 points. Three Bulldogs closed the game in double-figures, led by 17 from Whitney Jennings.
The Bluejays return to the court on Monday, Jan. 22 as Creighton faces Xavier at 10:00 am (CT) in the Cintas Center (Cincinnati, Ohio).
