Women's Hoops Earns a Measure of Revenge with 53-39 Win Over St. John's

Omaha, Neb. -- Led by a career performance from sophomore Ali Greene (14 points and six rebounds), the Creighton women's basketball team delivered a 53-39 win over St. John's on Friday, Jan. 26th.
The win avenged an overtime loss to the Red Storm earlier this month and pushed the Bluejays to 12-8 overall and 6-4 in BIG EAST action, while St. John's fell to 12-9 on the season and 5-5 in conference play.
It would have been difficult for the first half to be composed of two more diametrically opposed quarters. Creighton built a 14-4 lead with under a minute to play in the opening period, shooting 50% (5-of-10) from the field and got to the charity stripe eight times. The final two possessions saw St. John's hit its first three of the game, only to have senior Sydney Lamberty beat the buzzer with a trifecta of her own to send it to the second with the Bluejays up 17-7. The Red Storm shot 19% in the frame, going just 3-of-16.
The tables turned in the second quarter as the Red Storm held Creighton to the second lowest total in a quarter at three points in the period as the Bluejays went just 1-of-13 (8%) from the field. The result was a 22-20 Creighton deficit at the half.
Greene made her presence felt in the second half, delivering six points in each quarter. The two teams traded blows at the onset of the third, but back-to-back buckets from Green out the Bluejays up 26-24 (6:07). Knotted at 28-28 moments later, Creighton held St. John's scoreless for the final 3:08 to soar out to a 35-28 advantage. Sophomore Olivia Elger sent Creighton in the right direction with a three-ball from the top of the key, then Green dropped in a running seven-footer with 1:55 left. The final bucket of the quarter belonged to Lamberty as she glided in from the left side for a layup.
Back in control for the first time since the opening frame, the Bluejays extended their run to 12-0 with another layup from Green and a trey by Lamberty early in the fourth (8:51). Creighton's edge did not fall below double-digits the rest of the way, grow as much as 17 (53-36) with 1:17 left.
Elger led all scorers with 16 points. She was joined in double figures by Greene and Lamberty (13). Sophomore Jaylyn Agnew led the Bluejays on the glass with 12 rebounds. St. John's got a game-high nine points from Andrayah Adams.
Creighton returns to the hardwood on Sunday, Jan. 28th as the Bluejays host Seton Hall at 1:00 pm.
