Baseball Drops Series to Northeastern with 8-3 Loss on Sunday

Fort Myers, Fla. -- The Creighton baseball squad dropped its opening series of 2018 as the Bluejays fell to Northeastern 8-3 on Sunday, Feb. 18.
The loss moved the Bluejays to 1-2 on the season, while the Huskies moved to 2-1.
Northeastern jumped out to a early 5-0 lead, scoring five runs on four hits and two errors in the bottom of the first. The Huskies added single runs in the the second, third and fourth frames to race out to an 8-0 edge.
The Bluejays got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth as junior Clark Brinkman drew a one-out walk, sophomore Isaac Collins doubled to left to put runners at second and third, then junior Jack Strunc lined a two-run single to center.
Creighton continued to chip into Northeastern's edge with a run in the seventh as junior Michael Emodi drove home Brinkman on a sacrifice fly to left.
Time, however, ran out before the Bluejays could complete the comeback.
Husky starter Sean Mellen earned the win (1-0), allowing two runs on four hits in five innings of work. Creighton starter Preston Church fell to 0-1, allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits and four walks in 1.1 innings.
Brinkman closed the game 3-for-4, with two runs scored to guide the Bluejay offense.
Creighton returns to the diamond next weekend as the Bluejays travel to California to begin a three-game series with UC Davis on Friday, Feb. 23. First pitch is slated for 4:00 pm (CT).
