Omaha, Neb. -- Honoring seniors Kylie Brown, Sydney Lamberty, Myah Mellman, Bailey Norby and Aimee Rischard with the start, the Creighton women's basketball team sent their quartet out with a 64-55 win over Butler on Sunday, Feb. 18.
Creighton did not trail in the win, moving the Bluejays to 17-9 on the season and 11-5 in BIG EAST play. Meanwhile Butler fell to 14-15 overall and 6-11 in conference action.
The senior starting five got the Bluejays off to a quick start as Brown and Lamberty knocked down their first two shots, then Norby and Mellman followed to push the Bluejays out to a 9-0 edge (7:23). Creighton led by double digits twice in the opening quarter (16-6 and 18-8), taking an 18-10 edge into the second.
Butler closed two within four (18-14), scoring the final bucket of the first and the first two of the second period. Sophomore Jaylyn Agnew and freshman Temi Carda ended the Bulldogs scamper with a driving layup and a trey to give the Bluejays a bit more breathing room (23-14) with 5:21 left in the half. Butler answered once more, clawing within five by halftime as Creighton took a 25-20 advantage into the locker room.
The second half belonged to junior Audrey Faber and sophomore Ali Greene as the duo delivered 23 of their 27 points in the final 20 minutes.
After the Bulldogs opened the half with a three-ball to make it a one possession game (25-23), Creighton responded with a 12-0 run to regain control. Agnew got things rolling with a 10-foot jumper, then Faber found her range from beyond the arc. Faber sandwiched treys around a layup from Greene to give the Bluejays a 35-23 edge (4:38). Agnew capped the run by delivering another pull-up jumper to make extend the Bluejay edge to 14 at 37-23 (3:54). The final four minutes saw the Bulldogs scratch away as Creighton took a 42-35 lead into the final frame.
Creighton quickly pushed the lead back to double digits with a driving layup from Faber and two free throws by Lamberty, but a final push from the Bulldogs made it a 48-43 game with 7:08 left. Creighton responded once more, this time going on a 12-2 burst. Greene ignited the run with four straight from the free throw line, then following a Butler bucket Elger connected on a three-ball as the shot clock expired to make it 55-45 (5:24). Faber closed the run with a driving layup and another trey, as the Bluejays put the game away 60-45 (4:08).
Greene led Creighton with 14 points, while Faber finished with 13. Elger and Agnew rounded out Creighon's contingent in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively. Butler got a game-high 20 from Tori Schickel in the loss.
