2/25/2018 2:54:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Villanova, Pa. -- Despite 20 points and 10 rebounds from senior Sydney Lamberty, the Creighton women's basketball team suffered a 55-48 loss to Villanova on Sunday, Feb. 25.
The loss moved Creighton to 17-11 on the season and 11-7 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova moved to 22-7 overall and 12-6 in conference action.
Villanova jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening five minutes, but the Bluejays responded with back-to-back buckets from sophomore Ali Greene and a trey from Lamberty to get within one possession. Villanova, however, started a pattern that proved to be the story of the game, each time Creighton got within striking the Wildcats surged forward. This time Villanova got four back and went on to hold a 13-9 edge at the end of the first period.
Neither team could find any offensive rhythm in the second quarter as the score remained 13-9 until Villanova's Jannah Tucker connected at the 5:46 mark to make it 15-9. Sophomore Jaylyn Agnew scored on the Bluejays' next possession and Creighton pulled within three moments later on a trifecta from Myah Mellman (17-14 with 3:00 remaining). Down the stretch both teams found the bottom of the bucket with more consistency, capped by a trey from Nova's Bridget Hirlihy to send Creighton into the half down 27-20.
A trio of buckets from junior Audrey Faber brought the Bluejays within a bucket once more at 33-30 (3:57) in the third, but Villanova responded with a 7-0 run to take its largest lead at 40-30 (1:12).
Freshman Temi Carda delivered consecutive layup to close the third and open the fourth, to bring Creighton back within six at 40-34. The Bluejay defense kept Nova at bay for the first four minutes of the final frame, but Creighton couldn't get over the hump. The Bluejays got as close as five at 40-35 (7:06) and again at 49-44 (0:49), but ultimately fell to the Wildcats.
Lamberty's 20 points led Creighton, while Villanova's Mary Gedaka finished with a game-high 21.
Creighton returns to the hardwood on Sunday, March 4 as the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Bluejays opponent will be the fifth-seeded St. John's Red Storm, tip is scheduled of 2:30 pm (CT).
