Gillespie Leads Women's Golf To Eighth Place at UTRGV Invitational

Junior from Colorado has her best finish since 2016.
McALLEN, Texas -- Sydney Gillespie fired three consecutive rounds of 77 to lead the Creighton women's golf team to an eighth-place finish at the UTRGV Invitational in McAllen, Texas, on Tuesday.
The meet was held at McAllen Country Club, which played to a par 71 and was 5,924 yards. Tuesday's final round played to a par 70 after water damage on Monday night caused the 16th hole to be modified from a par 4 to a par 3.
Texas State won the meet by 21 strokes over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi thanks to a three-round total of 884 (290-285-309). The Bobcats were led by meet medalist Sasikarn Somboonsup. Somboonsup was one shot better than Sam Houston State's Hannah Alberto.
Gillespie led Creighton in scoring for the first time since the Creighton Classic in October of 2016, tying for 18th place in in the 74-woman field.
Tying for 21st place was freshman Amelia Lee, who followed up a pair of 78s on Monday with a final round 76 for a 232 total.
Rachel Grenko led CU on Monday with scores of 77 and 76 before wrapping up play with an 81 to tie for 29th place.
Rounding out the Bluejay team was Sarah Eversman (80-79-76=235, 33rd place) and Margaret Hickey (80-84-83=247, T55th).
Caroline Lake competed as an individual for CU but did not factor in the team scoring. She tied for 45th place after shooting circuits of 82, 83 and 77.
Creighton returns to competition on March 19 when it opens play at the three-day ORU/SFA Spring Break Invitational in Trophy Club, Texas.
