Week 1 edition of the 2018 class for women's soccer
As the transition from National Signing Day to pre-season looms, we take a look into the future Bluejays that will step onto the pitch this coming fall. Each week an in-depth background as well as thoughts from Creighton Head Coach Ross Paule will prepare fans for the members of the 2018 signing class.
Â
March 6 – Keenan Terrell and Michaela Weist
March 13 – Aline Reinkober and Nela Cizkova
March 20 – Aida Kardovic
March 27 – Morgan Szarka and Emma Roemer
April 3 – Francesca Frericks and Ansley Atkinson
Â
Born in Dublin, Ireland, Keelan Terrell is a 5'9 goalkeeper from Olathe, Kansas who brings in more depth to add to the Bluejay's shot-stopping department.
Â
"Keelan was actually our first commitment back 3 years ago. She's one of those special goalkeepers that can make game-winning saves and keep you in tough games" head coach Ross Paule said. "She's very quick, a shot stopper with solid technique and clean hands. She has all the potential and tools to be a number one keeper."
Â
As a freshman, Terrell received All-State First Team honors, while following it up with back-to back All-State Second Team accolades in her sophomore and junior campaigns. Her performances on the field helped Olathe East to conference titles in her freshman and sophomore seasons, as well leading her club team KC Blaze Blue Angels to Kansas State Cup wins over the past three years.
Â
"She's a competitor, there is no doubt about it. You have to be if you are a goalkeeper, and she has a great mentality to organize and not only hold the team accountable, but herself accountable," commented Paule.
Â
Not only excelling on the field, but striving for excellence in the classroom, Keelan has been on the honor roll all four years of high school, ranking in the top 10 percentile in her class while maintaining a G.P.A. of 4.5.
Â
"I fully expect her to come in and not only develop her talent but she will push to be the number one and give our other keepers competition," suggests Paule.
Â
Hailing from Overland Park, Michaela Weist joins Terrell in making the trip from Kansas to Omaha, coming out of St. James Academy. Weist is capable of playing across the entire back line but is expected to make most of her impact at the center back and right back positions.
Â
Ross Paule's excitement for the incoming freshman comes from her intangibles she can bring to the squad. "She is a strong competitor, she is someone who battles in every second of the game. She is somebody that can come right in and help strengthen our defense. You need somebody with grit like her that can lead by example," stated Paule.
Â
A varsity letter winner all four years of her high school career, Weist also received an All-Eastern Kansas League Second Team selection last season. Her play also earned her an All-Tournament Bob Durig MO-KAN nod as a member of the Thunder. Michaela has spent her last two years playing with the Sporting Blue Valley Showcase club team as well representing her high school club.
Â
"The way we are building our team I need each player in every position to be technical and confident enough to want the ball and possess and move it and that's exactly what she is capable of," mentioned Paule. "She is someone who is engaged in the game the whole time and will not be outworked. She can play anywhere in the back line as she is a hard player to beat one-on-one."
Â
Weist is well accomplished off the court as well, earning National Honor Society and Presidential Scholarship honors for her work in the classroom, as well as making the honor roll every semester of her high school tenure.
Â
"These girls are a good fit for the way that we want to play. You need players that are confident and can play in our system and I think Michaela and Keelan embody the type of player that have great potential to make us better," Paule closed.
