Queens, N.Y. -- The Creighton Baseball dropped its series opener with St. John's, 6-2, on Friday, April 13.
Creighton fell to 20-8 with the loss and moved to 1-2 in BIG EAST play. St. John's, meanwhile, moved to 20-10 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
St. John's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as the first three Red Storm hitters singled. Following a sac bunt and a sac fly St. John's were up by two.
The Red Storm pushed that lead to 3-0 with a solo home run from Anthony Brocato in the second.
The Bluejay deficit grew to 4-0 on an RBI double from Mike Antico in the fourth.
Creighton's offense struggled against Red Storm starter Sean Mooney, going without a hit until the sixth inning.
The offense, however, got rolling in the eighth. Junior Clark Brinkman opened the frame with an infield single. One out later sophomore Will Robertson was hit by a pitch, then junior Thomas Luevano blasted a two-out, two-run double to center to make it a 4-2 contest.
St. John's responded with two runs in its half of the eighth, then held on for the 6-2 win.
Mooney moved to 7-1 with the win, allowing one hit in 6.2 innings. Creighton starter Ryan Tapani dropped to 5-1 on the season, allowing four runs on six hits in seven innings.
Brinkman led the Bluejay offense with two hits, while Luevano went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
The two teams will conclude their series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 beginning at 12:00 pm (CT).
