Bluejays will face second-seeded DePaul on Friday morning
CAYCE, S.C. -- The No. 7 seed Creighton women's tennis team earned a 4-0 sweep of 10th-seeded Providence during the first round of the BIG EAST Tennis Championships at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center on Thursday morning.
The Bluejays improved to 15-7 and advanced to play second-seeded DePaul on Friday morning at 8 a.m. Central.
Creighton's 15 wins mark the most by a Bluejay women's tennis team since 1993 when the team finished 17-9.
Creighton opened the morning by winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to take the first point of the overall match. Claire Embree and Erin Epperson claimed a 6-1 win at No. 2 before Kendra Lavallee and Darby Rosette earned a 6-4 victory at No. 3.
The Bluejays continued to pile up the wins during singles action. Rosette won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 and Ashley Ishimura dropped only two games on her way to a straight-sets victory at the top spot (6-2, 6-0) to put Creighton ahead 3-0 overall. Ishimura's win also marked her team-leading 15th victory of the season, each at the top spot.
Freshman Erin Epperson helped the Bluejays clinch the overall match with a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 3 position.
Michaela Henne (No. 2), Laura Higueras (No. 5) and Embree (No. 5) each went unfinished during singles play.
"Providence thoroughly out-coached and out-classed us on the courts, but we were fortunate to win some big points," Lilly said." We just have to be much better tomorrow against DePaul."
The Bluejays and Blue Demons are slated to begin play on Friday at 8 a.m. Central at the Cayce Tennis Fitness Center in Cayce, South Carolina.
