Bluejays continue to improve
MARIBOR, Slovenia -- Playing for the third straight day, the Creighton Volleyball team dropped a 4-1 match to the Slovenian National Team on Friday in its final day in Maribor, Slovenia. Scores of the match in favor of the hosts were 26-24, 25-21, 18-25, 28-26, 15-6.
The 4-1 score was identical to Thursday's result against the same team, but Friday's match was held at the Dvorana Tabor Maribor venue that was noticeably bigger.
Though it dropped to 0-3 on its trip through Europe, Friday's match was easily Creighton's best so far with its freshmen class playing a starring role. The Bluejays dropped a 26-24 opener that featured nine lead changes before Slovenia scored the final two points. CU started two freshmen and one transfer in the match, with 14 women seeing playing time overall.
The hosts rode that momentum in the second frame, opening up an 8-0 lead before CU finally got on the board. The Jays did claw within 12-10, but ultimately fell 25-21.
Creighton controlled the third set to post a 25-18 win. The Bluejays were down 8-7 before a 5-0 run on Keeley Davis' serve that featured a pair of aces. Fellow freshman Annika Welty added an ace in CU's next rotation as the margin ballooned to 15-9. Following a timeout Slovenia closed the gap within one at 16-15 before CU closed out the set with a 9-3 surge that featured a pair of combo blocks from Welty and freshman Kari Zumach.
The fourth set contained 13 ties. Slovenia erased Creighton's 21-20 lead with four straight points to get to match point, but CU rallied with a 4-0 run of its own. The Jays would squander a pair of set point chances before Slovenia got a kill and consecutive blocks to take the 28-26 fourth set.
Though the match was decided, the teams agreed to play a fifth set to 15 points. Creighton scored the first point, but Slovenia answered with nine of the next 10 to take a stranglehold on the set and end the contest.
Davis finished the match with 10 digs, nine kills, three blocks and two aces, while Zumach contributed three blocks as well. Samantha Bohnet finished with 15 digs for CU.
The team stayed busy on Friday before and after its match. The team biked to downtown Maribor before doing some wandering around the city in the morning, then rode to the top of the mountains at night for a private dinner with the Bring It Promotions team that is organizing its tour.
After three days in Slovenia, the Bluejays will next trek to Hungary, before returning to the court on Sunday, June 17 in Budapest.
