New head coach brings in nine newcomers for 2018
OMAHA, Neb. -- New Creighton head coach Chris Gannon has added five men and four women that will compete for the Bluejay cross country programs beginning this fall.
"I am extremely excited about our 2018 class," said Gannon. "We put together a great group of kids who are fantastic runners and phenomenal students. They will excel at Creighton and help us continue to build a culture of excellence within our program."
The quartet being added to the women's side is highlighted by Blue Springs, Mo., native Danielle Hotalling. Hotalling was the state runner-up in cross country, as well as the 3,200 and 4x800 meter relay on the track. She wrapped up her career at Blue Springs South as an eight-time all-conference selection who was named all-state five times.
Marguerite Hendrickson comes to Creighton after a stellar career at St. Thomas More High School in Champaign, Ill. Hendrickson qualified for state four times in track and twice in cross country. She was a four-time conference champion in track.
Chloe Cassens was a four-time state qualifier for Coronado High School in Colorado Springs, Colo., ranking as a top-15 performer at the Nike Southwest Regionals in the 5,000 meters.
Erica Cradeur rounds out the women's class. The Elk Grove, Calif., native qualified for the state cross country meet in 2017 while competing for St. Francis High School.
Omaha native Jack Larsen and Boston Small highlight the quintet of men's newcomers. Larsen won the 2015 state cross country championship at Gross High School and last year finished as the runner-up. He's a four-time state cross country medalist, and also took second place at the state track meet in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races. Small was the state runner-up in the 1,600 meters this past spring while competing for Central High School in St. Joseph, Mo. Small is a six-time all-conference and five-time all-district honoree who is also a two-time conference champ in track, and a four-time all-conference and all-district performer in cross country.
Aidan King was an all-conference honoree who qualified for state at Barrington (Ill.) High School, Jackson Stamper qualified for state three times for Bettendorf, Iowa, and Bryce Shirley was a two-time league champ and three-time all-conference selection at Pueblo (Colo.) West High School.
Both teams open the season on Aug. 31 at the Augustana Twilight in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Creighton finished the 2017 season sixth in the BIG EAST Conference on the women's side and in seventh place on the men's side.
