OMAHA, Neb. -- A goal by Marcy Gans 2:34 into the match proved to be all the Creighton women's soccer team needed en route to a 1-0 victory over Western Illinois in nonconference action on a windy afternoon at Morrison Stadium on Sunday. The goal by Gans was her team-leading eighth of the season and her fourth game winner. With the win Creighton (8-6-1) snapped Western Illinois' 11-match unbeaten streak dating back to Sept. 7, dropping the Westerwinds to 12-2-1.
The match's only goal was set up by a pair of great touch passes by the Bluejays. Freshman Emily Orbell sent a cross from the corner of the box into the middle where senior Toch Ihemelu re-directed the ball to an open Gans. Gans then beat Western Illinois goalkeeper Meghan Tyk to the bottom right corner of the net from six yards out. Gans has now scored a goal in four straight matches to push her season output to eight, matching her career high set as a freshman.
The rest of the first half was evenly played and the Jays took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break. Creighton goalkeeper Kristen Casey recorded three of her five saves in the first period as WIU narrowly out-shot the Jays 6-5.
With the strong north wind behind their backs in the second half, the Jays were able to buckle down defensively and control the ball. Neither team seriously threatened in the half and Creighton was able to hold on for its sixth shutout of the season.
The shutout was the sixth of the season for Casey, with five coming at Morrison Stadium to break the facility's single-season shutout mark. With her five saves in the match, Casey moved into first on the Morrison Stadium career saves list with 62 rejections at home.
“The early goal going into the wind in the first half was huge,” said head coach Bruce Erickson. “It made them work that much harder the rest of the way.”
“I was pleased with our ball control in the match and depth was also critical for us this weekend,” said Erickson.
The Bluejays will now play a crucial MVC match at Evansville on Friday, Oct. 26. The preseason conference favorites are 2-1-2 in the MVC and have a one point advantage over Creighton for second in the league, as the top two teams have the luxury of a bye in the MVC Tournament.
NOTES: Marcy Gans has scored a point in every Creighton win this season, and has a goal in seven of the eight victories... Goalkeeper Kristen Casey now has 12 career shutouts, which is fifth all-time at Creighton... Casey is now three saves shy of fifth place on the CU career saves list... After scoring 11 career goals, Toch Ihemelu picked up her first career assist on Gans' goal.
