OMAHA – The Creighton Athletic Department had six teams honored by the NCAA with Public Recognition Awards in its most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR) reports, including five teams with a perfect score.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation, and retention each semester or quarter and provides a picture of the academic performance for scholarship student-athletes competing on every Division I athletic team. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, and the 2013-14 academic years.
The awards are given annually to the Division I sports teams demonstrating a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving top APRs within their respective sports.
Highlights from the most recent report include:
• Creighton's men's golf, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's tennis and women's volleyball teams each had perfect 1,000 scores, while men's basketball also earned recognition with a 991 mark that was second-best in the BIG EAST.
• Creighton was the only BIG EAST school with both a men's and women's basketball team recognized.
• Twelve of Creighton's 14 teams had a multi-year APR at or above the national average, including all six men's programs.
• According to reports that are now attributed to each coach, Creighton Volleyball (coached by Kirsten Bernthal Booth) has had a perfect APR each of the past eight years, while women's tennis (6, Tom Lilly), men's tennis (5, Tom Lilly) and women's basketball (5, Jim Flanery) each own streaks of five years or more.
