Softball Splits First Two Games At SportCo Kick Off Classic

Bluejays lost 4-2 against UNLV before downing Utah Valley 15-1 in 5 innings
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Creighton softball team split a pair of games to open the SportCo Kick Off Classic in Las Vegas on Friday night and early Saturday morning at Eller Media Stadium. The Bluejays fell 4-2 to host UNLV and defeated Utah Valley 15-1 (five innings).
Creighton's first game originally scheduled for 8 p.m. Central (6 p.m. in Las Vegas) did not start until 9:50 p.m., and the second game started about 12:20 a.m. Central.
The Bluejays jumped out to an early advantage during their first game of the tournament against UNLV.
During the top of the second inning Tash Coffiel drove in Sydney Jenkins from third base with an RBI single back to the pitcher for Creighton's first run of the season.
UNLV had a chance to tie or take the lead with the bases loaded and only one out in the bottom of the second, but Creighton starter Bryana Clark forced a line out and struck out her first batter of the night to preserve the early lead.
The Rebels pulled in front for the first time during the third frame. Mia Trejo lifted a two-run home run over the left-field wall to give UNLV a 2-1 edge. The home team on the scoreboard added one more run after a pair of Bluejay errors to take a two-run advantage.
Newcomer Hope Moreno helped the Bluejays cut into the UNLV lead with an RBI single through the middle to drive in Tash Coffiel from second to make it 3-2 in favor of the Rebels.
Creighton loaded the bases after Kelli Finan reached after being hit by the pitch before UNLV escaped the any further damage by inducing a ground ball to end the Bluejays' threat.
UNLV took a 4-2 lead during the sixth inning after an RBI single.
Sam Crowley opened Creighton's half of the seventh with a single before the Rebels induced a game-ending double play.
Clark pitched the complete game for the Bluejays and struck out three while allowing three earned runs.
Creighton did not waste any time against Utah Valley and scored four runs during the top of the first inning.
Ashley Cantu singled to open the game and scored on an RBI-single by Moreno. Jayci McGill drove in the second run of the game with a double to the right-center field wall. Freshmen Victoria Alvarez and Courtney Sandell delivered consecutive infield singles to give Creighton a 4-0 edge.
Moreno added her second RBI of the game with a single during the second inning to drive in Sam Crowley from second base following a walk and wild pitch. Mikaela Pechar followed Moreno with an RBI-double off the right-center field wall to extend the Bluejays' advantage to 6-0 during second inning.
The Bluejays added five more runs during the third inning from two singles, a bases-loaded walk and an error, and four insurance runs during the fifth.
Moreno went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored against the Wolverines.
Alvarez and Sandell each finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Nine different Bluejays scored at least one run and eight drove in at least one.
Freshmen Kiele Miller earned the victory during her first start as a Bluejay. The Dripping Springs, Texas native, struck out seven, walked three and allowed only three hits and one earned run during five innings of work.
Creighton's 14-run victory over Utah Valley marked the team's largest margin of victory since the Bluejays defeated Arkansas Pine-Bluff 16-2 on Feb. 23, 2013. The Bluejays' run output also tied the team's high since joining the BIG EAST (2013). Creighton scored 15 runs twice during the 2016 season (Campbell, 2/19/16; Georgetown, 4/9/16).
Additionally, the win snapped Creighton's 10-game losing streak that included the final nine games of the 2017 season.
Creighton is back in action at the SportCo Kick Off Classic on Saturday afternoon with a pair of games. The Bluejays is scheduled to play North Dakota State at 1:15 p.m. and Southern Utah at 5:45 p.m.
