The Bluejays trailed 3-0 before scoring one in the second, three in the fifth and one in the seventh
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Creighton softball team scored five unanswered to complete a BIG EAST series sweep of Seton Hall with a 5-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Mike Sheppard Sr. Field.
After allowing three runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Bluejays scored once in the second frame, three times during the fifth to take the lead, and once in the seventh.
The Bluejays improved to 7-2 in league play (22-12 overall) and moved into first place in the conference standings with two weeks remaining in the regular season. The Pirates dropped to 18-29 (4-11 BIG EAST).
Sunday's victory also marked head coach Brent Vigness' 899th career win as a college softball head coach (30th year, 25th at Creighton)
Seton Hall scored three runs with four extra-base hits during the bottom of the first inning, but did not record a hit after the opening frame as Kiele Miller struck out a season-high 12 batters and retired the final 10 batters she faced on her way to a team-leading 10th victory.Â
Creighton started its comeback during the top of the second. Kelli Finan led off the inning with a single to center field, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hope Moreno, and scored on a single through the middle of the diamond by Jayci McGill. The Bluejays put runners at the corners with two outs before a strike out ended the inning with Seton Hall leading 3-1.
Mileah McKelvy's RBI single to left-center field drove home Sam Crowley for the go-ahead run as Creighton scored three runs on four hits and sent seven to the plate during the top of the fifth inning. With runners at second and third, Crowley singled up the middle to drive in Kaitlynn Hunt and Tash Coffiel for the second and third Bluejay runs of the game to tie it at 3-3. Four pitches later, McKelvy found the gap in left-center field to send home Crowley from second and allow Creighton to take a 4-3 lead.
Crowley produced her third hit of the game with a single to the short to open the top of the seventh and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jordyn Sturgeon. Finan delivered with a double, her third base knock of the game, to drive in Crowley from second for an insurance run.
Miller need only four pitches to record the final three outs during bottom of the seventh as the freshman allowed only four base runners after the first inning.Â
The Pirates loaded the bases during the bottom of the third frame with two walks and a hit batsman, but Miller tallied her seventh strikeout of the game to keep Seton Hall out of the run column. An error allowed another Pirate to reach during the bottom of the fourth before Miller retired the final 10 hitters she faced.Â
Crowley and Finan each finished 3-for-4, while Crowley had two RBIs and scored twice and Finan scored one and drove in another.Â
Creighton returns to action on Thursday to start a seven-game home stretch to conclude the regular season. The Bluejays will host Nebraska-Omaha on Thursday at 6 p.m.
