OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton softball team used three home runs to power past Georgetown, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Creighton Sports Complex.Â
The Bluejays trailed 2-0 before hitting a trio of long balls to claim the third game of the weekend against the Hoyas and secure the series win after splitting a doubleheader on Saturday.
Creighton improved to 9-3 during BIG EAST play and 24-14 overall, while Georgetown fell to 5-12 in league play and 14-35 overall.
The Bluejays were held out of the hit column until the bottom of the fourth inning. After a walk, fly out and sacrifice bunt, Jayci McGill lifted her fourth home run of season over the left-center field wall to tie the game at 2-2. Hope Moreno also singled for Creighton's second hit of the game before a strikeout ended the inning.
Creighton took the lead during the bottom of the sixth. Kelli Finan led off the inning with a ground-rule double to right field before Jordyn Sturgeon hit a two-run homer to left field as the Bluejays built a 4-2 edge. One batter later, McGill blasted a 3-2 pitch over the left-field wall for her second home run of the game and fifth Creighton run of the game.Â
During the top of the seventh, Bryana Clark fired her third shutout inning of relief to tally her sixth victory of the season. Clark allowed one hit and struck out one during her team-leading 15th relief appearance.
Creighton starting pitcher Kiele Miller walked the first batter of the game before retiring the next nine Hoyas she faced.
Georgetown broke a 0-0 tie with two runs on four hits during the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead before the Bluejays responded with their two-run bottom half of the frame.
McGill finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBIs to pace the Bluejay offense, Tash Coffiel went 2-for-3 with a pair of infield singles and Sturgeon recorded two RBIs with her third home run of the season.Â
The Hoyas' Anna Brooks Pacha did not allow a hit through the first three innings on Sunday after she no-hit the Jays during the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Pacha ended the afternoon by allowing six hits and five earned runs while striking out seven and walking three.
Creighton concludes the regular season next weekend at home against Villanova. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon at the Creighton Sports Complex.Â
