Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame
Benes, Alan
Alan Benes
- Induction:
- 2011
Alan Benes has been described as one of the most dominating pitchers ever to have played for the Creighton Bluejays. Creighton Athletics Director Bruce Rasmussen has said, "Watching Alan's performance in the 1991 College World Series game against Wichita State, a classic pitching duel, has been one of the highlights of my Bluejay career."
Alan, who pitched at Creighton from 1991 to 1993, was named to Baseball America magazine's freshman All-American Team. He was a second-team All-American in 1992 and a first-team selection in 1993. He was the 1992 Pitcher of the Year in the Missouri Valley Conference
and a first-team MVC choice in 1992 and 1993. He was also named to the MVC All-Centennial Team. Alan's Creighton achievements include second-place rankings in the number of innings pitched in a season, strikeouts in a season, career strikeouts, and career complete
games; third-place rankings for career wins and career innings pitched; a fourth-place ranking for career winning percentage, and fifth in career earned run average.
Alan was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round of the June 1993 draft and made his major league debut in 1995. In his rookie season (1996), he finished the year with 13 wins, the most for a Cardinal rookie since 1967. His 131 strikeouts were the most by a Cardinal rookie since 1971. He was one of only two rookie pitchers in the National League to post double-digit win totals. He won the Cardinals Rookie of the Year award and the St. Louis Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America Rookie of the Year award in 1996.
Alan Benes pitched eight seasons in Major League Baseball before retiring due to arm injuries. He currently works as a scout for the St. Louis Cardinals and is actively involved in the St. Louis community.
Benes and his wife, Mary Beih, have three sons: Sean, Zach, and Ryan.
