Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame

Anthony F. Porto Sr., D.D.S.
- Induction:
- 1990
- Class:
- 1946
“Tony” Porto was a two-time All-American halfback for Creighton’s football team in 1941 and 1942. The last winner of the “Creightonian Trophy”, awarded annually to the best football player, Porto was offered contracts by both the Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions, but spurned them to become a dentist. He was elected to the CU Hall of Fame in 1990.
Dr. Anthony F. Porto, 87, passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, April 25, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M., Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at St. Ambrose Cathedral. Visitation with the family will be at St. Ambrose at 9 A.M., prior to the funeral.
Tony was born and raised in Des Moines, graduated from Dowling Catholic High School, Creighton University, and Creighton University Dental School. He practiced dentistry in Des Moines for 60 years, following two years of service during the Korean War.
Tony was an avid sports enthusiast his entire life. He was an all-state halfback at Dowling Catholic and twice an all-conference halfback at Creighton. Tony was the last winner of the prestigious Creightonian Trophy. He was a member of the Dowling Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame and Creighton University Athletic Hall of Fame. Tony had offers to play professionally for the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions. Instead, he returned to his home town of Des Moines to become a successful dentist. Tony had many interests throughout his life, including golf, boating, bridge, and ship-building. His family fondly remembers him for his cooking, bread baking, and wonderful words of wisdom.
Tony is survived by his wife of 66 years, Genevieve, children, Kathleen Lillis (Bill), Cecelia Kent (Mike), Steve Porto, Dennis Porto (Jan) and Michelle Nemmers (Doug); daughter-in-law Mary Porto, 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; siblings, Mary Anania, Tom Porto and Linda Porto; and sisters-in-law, Lucille Porto and Joanne Porto. He was preceded in death by his son, Anthony Porto; Jr., his siblings, Charles, Dick and JoAnn; and his parents, Lena and John.
