McConnell played baseball at Creighton from 1990-92, playing on three postseason teams including the club's 1991 College World Series participant. Prior to being the 13th overall pick in the 1992 Major League Baseball draft, McConnell was named a First Team All-American and MVC Player of the Year after hitting .400 with 14 homers, 73 RBI and 29 stolen bases. He remains among Creighton's all-time leaders in homers (5th) and slugging percentage (10th) and also owns 155 RBI, 214 hits and 168 runs scored. McConnell also played on the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team, hitting .318 for Team USA.
