He also had an honored career as a championship football coach at Sioux City (Iowa) Bishop Heelan that was cherished by Crusaders far and wide.
Not quite so well known is his distinguished playing career in not only football but also basketball at East High or his All-Missouri Valley Conference basketball career as a team captain in the legendary Creighton coaching days of Eddie Hickey.
With the addition next March of North High grad Jeff Donaldson to the Iowa High School Basketball Hall of Fame, Fleming is a member of a rare fraternity. Fleming, Donaldson, Central’s Dan Smith and North’s John Tillo and Tommy Goodman are the only Sioux City players in the Hall.
Fleming was named to several all-state teams in two sports tabulated by both the Iowa Daily Press Association (now the Iowa Newspaper Association) and the Des Moines Register & Tribune.
As a junior he earned IDPA third-team football plaudits in 1935 and was a first-team selection in 1936, along with Oskaloosa’s Robert Roe, no relation to Bob Roe, Sioux City’s foremost pizza empressario and sports booster.
Fleming was also a first-team IDPA basketball pick in 1936 and a second-teamer in 1937 when he helped East to a fourth-place finish in the one-class, 16-school boys state tournament.
