A 1984 Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Gil Passarella ranks second in Creighton Baseball history with a .406 career batting average and first with a .732 career slugging percentage. He received the Duce Belford Award, symbolic of the most valuable player on the Creighton Baseball team, following both the 1968 and 1970 campaigns.
Passarella batted .403 as a freshman in 1968 and ranked ninth nationally with a .764 slugging percentage in 1967, when he had five home runs with 18 RBI in 23 games.
In 1969 he was the national leader in RBI per game (1.62), second in slugging percentage (.900), fourth in home runs per game (.38) and ninth in batting average (.471) of the College Division of the NCAA.
An infielder who played at both shortstop and third base during his CU career, Passarella closed his time on The Hilltop by ranking third in the country in slugging percentage (.786), fifth with 1.25 RBI per game and 17th in batting average (.437) in 1970.
The Chicago-area native was selected as one of the Outstanding College Athletes of America in 1968 and named to the ABCA Topps All-District Baseball Team in 1970.
Passarella played four seasons in the Minor Leagues with the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox organizations. A 1971 Creighton graduate, he later served as owner of Park Ridge Travel, as well as assisting the Chicago Cubs organization as the manager of the Mesa Baseball Administration.
