Sebastian "Subby" Salerno

Sebastian "Subby" Salerno was the head men's basketball coach from 1952-55, winning 30 games on the Bluejay sidelines. He also played for CU from 1945 to 1949, scoring 114 points in 21 games. Salerno headed to the University of Iowa on a football scholarship, but soon after starting preseason practice, he came down with appendicitis and returned home, his son said. When Salerno recovered, he enrolled at Creighton and joined the varsity basketball team as a freshman, playing for coaches Duce Belford and Eddie Hickey.
After graduating in 1949, he stayed as Creighton's freshman coach and became head coach when Belford was named athletic director. Bob Gibson, later a Hall of Fame major league baseball pitcher, was one of Salerno's star players.
In 1953, Salerno was named Italian-American Coach of the Year by Unico National, an Italian-American service organization. Among the players on the all-star "team" that year was Joe Cipriano of the University of Washington, later Nebraska's head basketball coach.
Salerno was the 20th member of Creighton's Athletic Hall of Fame when he was inducted in 1986.
