Men's Soccer Defeats North Carolina

OMAHA, Neb. - Despite only mustering up four shots on goal, the Creighton men's soccer team defeated North Carolina this evening, 3-0. The win gave the seventh-ranked Bluejays the title at the third annual Diadora Challenge in front of 1,762 fans.
Efficiency and defense for the Bluejays were keys, as Creighton held the Tar Heels to just four shots on goal as well, and just 12 shots all evening. Saturday, in UNC's 3-1 victory over Bradley, the Tar Heels took 24 shots and 13 were on goal.
The Bluejays started off the scoring with a Steve Bernal tip-in off of a Angel Rivillo assist at the 18:55 mark of the first half. CU added a second goal right before half at the 42:35 mark, as junior Joel Reddington scored just his second goal of his career, to make the score 2-0 at halftime.
North Carolina's Chris Carrieri led the Tar Heels with four shots, but was hounded all evening by the Creighton defense, led by all-American candidate David Wright. Carrieri had scored a goal and added an assist in the Tar Heels victory over Bradley Saturday evening.
Brian Mullan's goal at 73:20, with an assist from Wright, ended the scoring for the Jays, who are now 1-0 on the season. North Carolina falls to 1-1.
The Jays next action will be next Sunday, September 12, as they travel to rival Saint Louis. Creighton defeated the Billikins twice last season, including a 4-1 overtime victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
