BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Creighton men's soccer team extended its winning streak to four games on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 defeat of Western Kentucky. The Bluejays also moved their unbeaten streak to six matches, improving to 7-3-3 overall and 4-0-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Creighton jumped on the board early when sophomore Matt Wieland punched in his second goal of the season in the sixth minute. Wieland's goal at 5:55 was set up off of a David Wagenfuhr corner kick.
The Jays then came out on the attack early in the second half as well, getting a scoring opportunity just two minutes in. After Wagenfuhr dribbled through the WKU defense, he was taken down in the box and the Bluejays were awarded a penalty kick. Freshman Jarod Tarver attempted and converted the PK at the 46:58 mark, giving the Jays a 2-0 lead. Wagenfuhr's injury from the take down forced him out of the match.
The Hilltoppers (6-7-1, 3-2-0 MVC) out-shot the Bluejays 11-7 on the afternoon, but could only convert a late scoring chance to cut into CU's lead. Scott DeGaris found the back of the net in the 73rd minute, but WKU could not add another tally.
Junior Andrew Brown earned his first start in goal this season for the Bluejays. He stopped two shots in his first victory since the 2001 season.
CU is now 8-0-0 all time against the Hilltoppers, with the last four meetings all decided by one goal. The Jays are unbeaten in their last six matches this fall, with their last loss coming to 17th-ranked Brown on Sept. 19.
At 4-0-1 in the MVC, the Jays are tied with 15th-ranked Tulsa for second place in conference, trailing only Bradley (4-0-2) for the league-lead. CU will welcome the first-place Braves to Omaha this Friday night at 7:05 p.m. for a key Valley battle.
The Bluejays return home for their final regular season contests at the Creighton Soccer Field next weekend. Following their Friday night match with Bradley, the Jays will play host to Eastern Illinois on senior day next Sunday at 1:05 p.m. The Creighton Soccer Field is located at 17th and Cass Streets in downtown Omaha.
