TULSA, Okla. - Creighton's seven-game winning streak came to an end with a 2-1 loss at Tulsa in men's soccer Sunday afternoon. The 16th-ranked Bluejays, who clinched the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title on Friday, end the MVC regular-season with a 7-1-1 conference mark, 10-4-3 overall.
Tulsa (12-4-2, 6-1-2 MVC) came into the game with the top-ranked offense in the MVC and the Valley's leading scorer, Ryan Pore, netted the first Golden Hurricane goal at 8:05. The goal was Pore's 17th on the season.
The Hurricane held their 1-0 lead until the 88th minute when Jonathan Welsh scored his first collegiate goal. Welsh's tally at 87:07 came after he gathered a rebound, Matt Thomas was credited with an assist on the score.
The Bluejays then surrendered the TU game-winning goal with just 23 seconds remaining in regulation. Kris Glasser found the back of the net from the top of the box to hand CU its first conference loss of the season.
Neither team could manage many shots on goal, as the Jays logged three and Tulsa tallied four shots on net. Both goalkeepers stopped two shots apiece in the game.
“Tulsa is a very good team with an exciting group of attacking players,” head coach Bob Warming said after the match. “We certainly had plenty of scoring opportunities which we could have finished, but couldn't get the job done. It was a learning opportunity for our players to know if we can finish those chances, we have a shot to win on the road.”
Creighton will play host to Southwest Missouri State this Saturday, Nov. 8 in the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Bears earned the eighth seed with a 3-5-1 MVC record, 8-7-2 overall. The winner of the play-in match will then advance to the final four of the Valley Championship, played at SportPort Soccer Complex in St. Louis, Mo.
The MVC regular-season champion Bluejays and SMS will face off at the Creighton Soccer Field at 1:05 p.m., this Saturday. For ticket information, contact the Creighton athletics department at 402-280-2720. The Creighton Soccer Field is located at 17th and Cass Streets in downtown Omaha.
