CHARLESTON, Ill. - Rodrigo Faria's goal in the fourth minute of play held up as the Creighton men's soccer team moved its unbeaten streak to six matches with a 1-0 victory at Eastern Illinois Saturday afternoon. The Bluejays improved to 9-3-3 on the season and 3-0-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference with their second consecutive 1-0 shutout victory.
Faria, a freshman from Brazil, scored his second goal of the season when he took a feed from Byron Dacy and Tony Schmitz at 3:37 and found the back of the net from about 10 yards out.
"I thought it was good for us to have this type of game in conference play," said head coach Bob Warming after the victory. "It was very hard-fought and competitive on a hard, bumpy field in windy conditions. We really dug in and battled to get the result today. Good teams can play pretty and good teams can battle, but great teams can do both."
Back-up goalkeeper Nathan Gibson was rewarded with his first Creighton start in his home state. The Edwardsville, Ill., native stopped six shots to record the shutout and earn his first Division I victory. Gibson, a med-school student at Creighton, is completing his final year of collegiate eligibility after earning Division II All-America recognition at Truman State.
CU is now 12-0-1 against EIU (9-5-1, 1-3-1 MVC) since the Panthers joined the MVC as an affiliate member in 1996. The Jays have now out-scored EIU 18-0 in their last five meetings.
The Bluejays will now enjoy a week off from competition while enjoying a week off of classes for fall break. CU returns home next Saturday to play in its final home regular-season match of the season against Evansville. The Jays and Purple Aces kick off at 7 p.m. at Morrison Stadium.
