MADISON, Wis. - Michael Kraus' goal in the 87th minute proved to be the game-winner as the Creighton men's soccer team defeated Wisconsin-Milwaukee 1-0 Friday night at the Wisconsin Invitational. The win moves the Jays to 2-2-1 on the season.
Jeff Thayer was fouled about 35 yards out to set up the scoring play. Junior Pietari Holopainen served the ensuing free kick through the Panther (2-3-0) defense to Kraus. The senior, Creighton's active career scoring leader, scored his first goal of the season on a one-touch to provide all the offense CU needed in the shutout.
"It was great for Mike to finally get that monkey off his back and get his first goal of the season," said head coach Bob Warming after the Jays' second straight shutout. "Now he can just go out and relax and hopefully that will get him on a roll."
The match was played evenly, with UWM packing its defense in an attempt to keep the Bluejay offense in check. The Panthers were dangerous on the counter attack, but could not convert a scoring chance. UWM out-shot the Jays 11-7 in the CU victory, with the Panthers logging three shots on goal to Creighton's two. Matt Allen stopped all three Panther shots in goal for the Bluejays.
"Tonight it was nice that it was one of the first times this season that we've had a majority of our guys healthy," said Warming. "We looked in better shape out there, with every one knowing their positions on the field and we didn't have as many guys just filling in out there."
The Bluejays return to action on Sunday when they play the tournament host
