
Volleyball Sweeps Green Bay

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Sarah Schulze, Allie Oelke and Korie Lebeda all turned in double-doubles as the Creighton volleyball team swept Green Bay to open play at the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. Scores of the match were 30-20, 30-23, 30-27.
Creighton won its second straight match without all-MVC MB Jessica Houts to improve to 6-4, while Green Bay dropped to 1-6 with the loss.
"Overall I'm pleased with the effort," said CU head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "In system we did some good things and took advantage of what we could. I thought Sarah Schulze had a great night, in particular."
Creighton hit .364 in the first game to land an easy 30-20 win. Kelly Goc had five of her match-high 15 kills to get CU started on the right foot, as the Jays pounded 19 kills.
Creighton took control of the second game with Korie Lebeda's six-point serving run that gave them the lead for good at 13-8. The Jays would ride the right arm of Goc down the stretch of game two's 30-23 win, as Goc earned kills during four of CU's final six points.
Goc also had five kills in the third game, a back-and-forth affair that featured six ties and four lead changes. This time CU took the lead for good at 26-24 after consecutive attack errors on the Phoenix. The Jays would take the match 30-27 on an error from UWGB's leading attacker, Liesl Tesch.
Goc led the Jays with 15 kills, hitting .270 in 37 swings. Oelke made a triumphant return to her homestate with her second double-double of the year, finishing with 10 kills, 12 digs and four blocks. Schulze also turned in her second straight (and third career) double-double with 10 kills and a season-best 17 digs. Lebeda had her second double-double of 2007, finishing with 40 assists and 10 digs to go with five errorless kills. Bluejay libero Bianca Rivera had 14 digs to reach 198 in her 10th career match, while Lauren Bloemke replaced Houts with eight kills and a match-best five blocks.
CU hit .287 on the evening and finished with 52 kills, four aces, 73 digs and eight blocks.
Green Bay was led by 12 kills from Tesch, while setter Betty Slinger had 27 assists, nine digs and six kills. Green Bay hit .103 and totaled 40 kills, five aces, 66 digs and two blocks.
Creighton continues play with two matches on Saturday in the Gopher Invitational. The Bluejays will open with 10 am match with Charlotte before taking on No. 13 Minnesota at 7:30 pm.
