
Men's Soccer Advances to Third Round of NCAA Tournament with 2-1 Win

The Bluejays (15-1-2) got on the board in the first minute as senior Andrei Gotsmanov scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season just 36 seconds into the match. His goal came from nine yards out as Golden Hurricane goalkeeper Tyrel Lacey had a loose ball go off his hands and bounce right to Gotsmanov who put it in for an early 1-0 Creighton advantage.
The Bluejays added to their lead in the 35th minute as Jeff Thayer crossed the ball to Seth Sinovic who scored for the second time on the season.
Defensively Creighton kept up its stinginess, allowing just its eighth goal of the season in the 86th minute. Golden Hurricane Austin Neil headed a cross in from teammate Jeovahnni Sandez, to put the CU advantage at just 2-1. It was not enough however, as Bluejay keeper Brian Holt was able to lead the defense in stopping
"I knew tonight would be a battle," Creighton head coach Bob Warming said after the victory. "I'm proud of our guys for coming up with two really special goals."
With the win, the Bluejays snapped the Golden Hurricane's 16-game unbeaten streak on the season.
Creighton pushed its own unbeaten streak to 14 (12-0-2) with the victory at Morrison Stadium. The Jays, who are 9-1-0 at home this season, will now play host to UConn (11-4-6) on Saturday. The Huskies advanced to the third round following a 1-0 first-round victory over

NOTES: Creighton is now 21-15-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, including 6-4-0 at home and 5-1-0 at Morrison Stadium ... CU has won at least one NCAA Tournament game in six of the past seven seasons ...
