OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton made 13 three-point field goals Friday night, helping overcome an 0-for-18 stretch from the field to start the game, as the women's basketball team opened the 2009-10 season with a 77-54 win over Arkansas State in the first regular-season basketball game played at D.J. Sokol Arena in the Wayne and Eileen Ryan Athletic Center.
Creighton is 1-0, avenging a 73-56 loss in Jonesboro, Ark., to the Red Wolves last November in the season-opener.

Creighton would miss its first 18 shots of the season before Kelsey Woodard finally broke the ice with the first of her six three-pointers, 5:08 into the game. The first Bluejay basket in their new home opened the floodgates, kickstarting a 19-0 run that saw Creighton take the lead for good. Chevelle Herring drained a long trey at the first half buzzer to stake the Jays to a 37-14 halftime lead.
The Jays also owned a 36-16 edge on the glass in the opening 20 minutes, making eight of their 13 three-pointers in the first half.
Creighton remained in control throughout the second half, with its lead never dipping below 18 points after halftime.
The Bluejays were keyed by 18 points from Woodard, as all of her points came on her six makes from beyond the arc. Junior center Kellie Nelson had 13 points and seven rebounds, while preseason MVC Player of the Year Megan Neuvirth rounded out CU's double-figure trio with 11 points.
Sam Schuett made her return from a medical redshirt season with eight points and a team-best eight rebounds and three steals. Kelsey Crites also had eight rebounds for the Jays, while Herring topped the team with five assists. Creighton outrebounded ASU 53-36 and knocked down 13 three-point baskets in 31 attempts from downtown.
