DAVIS, Calif. - Kelsey Woodard hit a left-handed buzzer-beating overtime layup to give the Creighton women's basketball team a 63-61 win at UC Davis Friday night. The shot was Creighton's only two-point field goal after halftime, as the Bluejays tied a school record with 16 three-pointers and tied the Missouri Valley Conference record, establishing a school mark with 41 three-point attempts. Woodard led all players with 22 points in the win, hitting six three-pointers, while Sam Schuett added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Bluejays (4-1).
The Aggies (2-3) scored the first nine points of the game and were up by 11, leading 13-2 six minutes into the game. Schuett hit the first of the record-breaking threes for the Bluejays to start a 14-0 run to give the visitors their first lead of the game, up 16-13 after a Chevelle Herring three-pointer.
With the game even at 25, Creighton scored the next nine points on three consecutive Woodard three-pointers on CU's next three possessions. The Jays built to an 11-point first half lead before owning a 43-33 halftime lead. After its slow start, the Bluejays would shoot over the UC Davis zone to the tune of 10-of-20 three-pointers in the opening half.
After the half, the Aggies slowly chipped away at the Bluejay lead, finally regaining the advantage at 50-49 with 10:22 left in regulation. Ally Jensen gave the Jays a 58-55 lead with a triple with 2:54 remaining in the second. UCD would make a layup on its next trip down the floor to cut the CU lead to one, before tying the game at 58 with 30 seconds left on a free-throw from preseason all-Big West performer Paige Mintun. Mintun missed her attempt which would have given the Aggies a lead and Jensen's attempt at the buzzer missed.
In overtime, the Jays fell behind 61-58, after Mintun again made 1-of-2 free-throws with 2:44 left in overtime. Jensen would again hit a big shot for the Jays, as the freshman tied the game on a trey with 1:19 left on the clock. UCD would not manage a shot after CU tied it, turning the ball over on its final two possessions. After a Bluejay timeout with just more than 10 seconds remaining, Woodard worked her way into the paint and got a left-handed layup to fall at the buzzer to give CU a solid road win.
The Bluejays were just 5-for-29 (.172) from the field in the second half, including 0-for-11 from inside the arc. Meanwhile the Aggies were able to force overtime by hitting 9-of-18 shots from the floor in the second half.
Creighton's 16 three-pointers tied a school record originally set against Oral Roberts on Dec. 6, 1989. The 41 three-point attempts broke the former CU mark of 37 set on Nov. 19, 2004 against Northwestern and tying the MVC mark set by Illinois State on Nov. 26, 2003 against Air Force.
Woodard was 6-of-12 from beyond the arc, finishing with a game-high 22 points. Schuett tied a career-high by going 4-for-8 from three-point range, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds for her seventh career double-double. Megan Neuvirth played through foul trouble to log eight points, nine rebounds and team-highs with five assists and four steals. Herring finished with 10 points for the Jays. Jensen was 3-for-8 from distance, while Neuvirth added one trey and Herring made two threes to total up the record.
Mintun finished with a team-high 13 points and five assists for UCD, while Heidi Heintz added 11 points for the winners.
The Jays out-rebounded the Aggies 42-31, despite playing without starting center Kellie Nelson, who was sidelined with an injury.
Creighton, off to just its second 4-1 start in the last eight years, will return to action when it plays host to Saint Louis next Friday. The Jesuit institutions will clash at D.J. Sokol Arena at 7:05 p.m on Dec. 4.
