OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton could not hold its halftime lead over 15th-ranked Oklahoma, falling 67-58 to the Sooners at D.J. Sokol Arena Sunday afternoon. The Bluejays led by as many as five points in the game and led 30-27 at halftime, but the Bluejays made just six field goals and shot 23.1 percent in the second half and finished with a season-worst 32.7 field goal percentage for the game. The loss, Creighton's first at its new home, was its third straight to a nationally-ranked Big 12 opponent.
Oklahoma (9-2) scored the first basket of the game, while the Bluejays (5-4) had three turnovers on their first three possessions before Chevelle Herring knocked down a jumper 2:15 into the game. The Jays made their first five field goal attempts and tied the game four times before claiming their first lead of the day, 18-15, when Kelsey Woodard drained a three-pointer with 11:51 left in the half. Creighton's largest lead of the game came was a 26-21 edge after Katie Frank hit just her second three-pointer of the season with 6:09 left. OU scored the next five points to pull even at 26, before the Bluejays owned a 30-27 lead at the half.
Megan Neuvirth made a pair of free-throws 19 seconds into the second half to give the Jays another five-point lead, up 32-27. The Sooners responded by scoring the next 10 points, the last eight coming from National Player of the Year candidate Danielle Robinson. But the Bluejays battled back, with three-pointers from Sam Schuett and Megan Neuvirth giving the Jays a 38-37 lead with 13:09 left in the game. Robinson scored her 10th straight point for OU with 11:59 remaining in the game and the Sooners would not relinquish the lead.
OU went ahead 47-40 with 9:39 to play before the Jays scored six straight points and started to build momentum, before Lauren Willis quieted the crowd of 1,453 with a three-point basket. CU would never get within four again as OU built to a double-digit lead for the first time and held on for a nine-point win.
The OU defense limited CU's looks in the second half, as the Bluejays finished 6-of-26 from the field after halftime, while half of their points in the second half came from the free-throw line.
The Bluejays turned the ball over a season-high 22 times and shot a season-low 32.7 percent from the field in the loss. After leading OU 20-15 in rebounding at the half, the Bluejays were out-rebounded 24-15 in the second half, to lose the battle of the boards 39-35 in the game.
Robinson, a preseason All-American, finished with a game-high 22 points for OU, also leading her team with seven rebounds and five assists in 38 minutes. Nyeshia Stevenson added 11 points, while both OU players had seven turnovers to contribute to 21 Sooner give-aways.
Neuvirth led the Bluejays with 19 points, nine rebounds and four steals, while attempting a career-high 13 free-throws and tying her career-best with eight makes from the line. Her nine boards moved her career total to 780 and into third place on the CU career rebounding chart.
Schuett finished with 16 points and five boards, while going a perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw line for a career-night at the stripe.
Creighton will now take eight days off for Christmas before concluding its non-conference schedule with a home game against North Dakota State on Monday, Dec. 28. CU and NDSU will tip at 6:05 p.m., at D.J. Sokol Arena on the 28th.
