DES MOINES, Iowa – The Creighton men's tennis team ended its run at the Drake Invite with two runner-up finishes. James McAvoy took second in the C singles flight and the doubles team of J.T. Christian and Billy Paluch took second in the doubles draw on Sunday at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
McAvoy started his day by defeating Southern Illinois-Edwardsville's Mike Chamberlain 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinal match. McAvoy could not finish his tournament with a title, however, as he fell to Minnesota's Eddie Svenda in a hard fought, 6-0, 1-6 and 6-0 final.
Ryan Norman also made it to the C singles semifinals, but he fell to eventual champion Svenda 6-2, 6-2.
Paluch and Christian qualified for the finals in the doubles draw yesterday afternoon, but fell in the title match to Cesar Bracho and Mauricio Ballivian of Drake, 8-4.
The other Bluejay in action Sunday afternoon was Kyle Obermeier. He went 2-0 on Saturday to reach Sunday's semifinal, but fell to eventual champion James McKie (Drake) 6-1 and 6-2.
The Creighton men will continue their fall season in two weeks, when they take part in the Omaha Collegiate Invitational.
