
Bluejays Blast Salukis, 84-62, in Women's Basketball

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Kellie Nelson scored a career-high 24 points to lead five Bluejays in double figures as the Creighton women's basketball team blasted Southern Illinois 84-62 Saturday afternoon at SIU Arena. Nelson's second-straight career-high scoring game paced the way, as the Bluejays shot 56.9 percent from the field in the win to improve to 10-5 on the year and 5-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play. The Salukis dropped to 3-12 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
Creighton pulled away from the Salukis midway through the first half after the teams exchanged baskets for the first five minutes. Leading 14-13, the Bluejays ran off a 15-2 run keyed by their hot shooting to claim a 29-15 advantage with 8:36 to play. The Jays would lead by as many as 16 in the first half and took a 40-26 lead into halftime after shooting 62.5 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes.
After Kelsey Woodard made a pair of free throws to start the second half for the Jays, SIU would never get within 15 for the remainder of the contest. Creighton's largest lead of the afternoon came when it led by 27, up 66-39, with better than nine minutes to play.
Nelson poured in 15 of her career-best 24 points in the first half, making all six of her first-half field goal attempts. The junior center would finish the game 9-for-11 from the field to go along with four rebounds and two assists.
One game after not playing the second half because of a knee injury, Megan Neuvirth returned to form with her second double-double of the year, leading the Bluejays with 12 rebounds to compliment her 10 points and three steals. Sam Schuett added 12 points and a pair of blocked shots, while Woodard had 11 points and Kelsey Crites finished with 10 off the bench for the Jays. Ally Jensen chipped in nine points, making both of her three-point attempts in the game.
The Bluejays made 29-of-51 shots in the game to finish 56.9 percent from the field and made 6-of-12 three-pointers. CU out-rebounded the Salukis 40-28, while limiting SIU to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field.
Katrina Swingler came off the bench to lead the Salukis with a season-high 19 points. The Jays held SIU leading scorer Christine Presswood to just seven points on 1-of-7 shooting from the field and kept Teri Oliver to just eight points and 1-of-5 shooting from the floor.
Creighton, now 4-0 on the road in MVC play, returns home for its next three home games, hosting Bradley on Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
