EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Despite dominating the run of play and playing with a man advantage for the final 77 minutes of regulation, the 11th-ranked Creighton men's soccer team needed overtime to defeat preseason Missouri Valley Conference favorite Evansville, 2-1, Saturday night at Black Beauty Field. Ethan Finlay scored the golden goal in the 96th minute to help the Bluejays complete a comeback from a 1-0 second-half deficit, following Andrew Ribeiro's equalizer in the 81st minute.
The win moves Creighton to 9-2-0 on the year and 2-0-0 in MVC play, dropping Evansville to 5-7-1 overall and 1-2-0 in Valley play. The victory also improved Creighton's record to 13-0-7 in its last 20 regular-season road matches, dating back to 2006.
The Bluejays played without Jose Gomez, the MVC's assist leader and CU's top playmaker, as the midfielder served a red card suspension for a booking he received in Creighton's previous contest.
"I was proud of our effort tonight," said head coach Jamie Clark following his first MVC road match. "Evansville played tough and made it difficult on us. We went into a hostile environment and had to work 90 minutes to have a chance to get to overtime. Once we did that, we were able to capitalize and get the result."
It was a red card on the Purple Aces early in the match that opened up the game for the Bluejays. UE's Tom Irvin was sent off just 12:44 into the match for his hard challenge against Kyle Deremer, that kept the Bluejay defender on the ground for several minutes. The Bluejays used the man advantage to out-shoot the Aces 8-3 in the opening half, with four of CU's shots finding their way on goal.
Creighton continued the high-pressure attack in the second half, but found themselves on the wrong side of a 1-0 score following a score from the home team in the 55th minute. Blake Schneider's corner kick started the scoring play for UE. It appeared as though the Bluejays had cleared the corner, but Mike Luttrull sent a low drive into the net from a difficult angle to give the Aces a 1-0 lead. The shot was UE's first of the half, and the Aces would attempt just one more shot in regulation, and none in the final 23 minutes of regulation.
The Bluejays peppered the Aces' goal with shots without results for most of the second half, until the Bluejays finally found the back of the net in the 81st minute. Sergio Castillo started the build up with a through ball to Kris Clark running up the left side. Clark bent in a left-footed serve into the box and Ribeiro headed in the equalizer. The score for Ribeiro was his third of the season.
The score remained 1-1 until the end of regulation, as the Bluejays out-shot the Aces 20-5 and owned a 6-3 edge in corners during regulation.
Finlay's winner was a result of freshman Liam Kelly winning a header and sending it forward. Kelly's header brought UE goalkeeper Robert Randant off his line, but Finlay beat him to the ball and chipped it over the pulled keeper. The score was Finlay's league-best 10th of the season, his fourth game-winner of the year and his 13th career game-winner.
Brian Holt made one save in goal for the Bluejays, who used only one sub (Kelly) in the match. Kelly's assist on the game-winner was his first career point. UE's Randant needed eight saves to keep his team in the contest.
The Bluejays remain on the road for their next three contests, as they will play at rival Drake next. The Jays and Bulldogs will face off in Des Moines at 7 pm on Wednesday.
