AKRON, Ohio - The top-ranked and top-scoring team in the nation scored only one goal Wednesday night, but it was enough to capture a win over the ninth-ranked Creighton Bluejays at Lee R. Jackson Soccer Field. The 1-0 victory was No. 1 Akron's 23rd straight home win, extending its home unebeaten streak to 34 matches, while snapping Creighton's 22-match unbeaten streak in regular-season road contests.
Akron, the 2009 NCAA runner-up, improved to 14-0-1 on the season. Creighton fell to 11-3-0 while being shutout for the first time this season.
"We wanted to come to Akron to see where we stood with the nation's best," said Jamie Clark after suffering his first road loss as Creighton's head coach. "I think we can walk away not satisfied with the result, but happy because we know we are close to being one of the top teams in the country."
As they have done all season, the Bluejays came out attacking, creating the first scoring chance of the match when Kris Clark was able to get behind the Akron defense and take a shot on goal in the third minute. Akron's David Meves was up for the challenge, stopping the close range shot.
The Clark shot turned out to be Creighton's only shot on goal in the opening half, as the teams played an even first 45 minutes. Both sides attempted three shots, with one working its way on goal, as the Jays held the Zips scoreless through the first half for just the third time this season.
The Jays escaped an early scoring chance by the Zips, when Brian Holt came off of his line to challenge a run by Darren Mattocks in the 12th minute. Mattocks was able to work his way around Holt, but senior defenders Josh Moran and Kyle Deremer came back to challenge the Akron freshman and his shot attempt at an open net hit the cross bar, over the head of sophomore Brent Kallman who had covered the line for the Jays.
Two of Akron's three MAC Hermann Trophy candidates connected on the lone tally of the match midway through the second half. Darlington Nagbe scored in the 63rd minute on a give and go with Anthony Ampaipitakwong, as Nagbe took a feed while running past the CU defense, scoring from straight on just inside the 18-yard box.
Creighton had a pair of chances to score an equalizer, but sent shots just wide both times. Clark had great scoring chance with just under 18 minutes left in the match, when he took a headed pass from Liam Kelly off of a Holt kick and sent the ball just outside the right post. A free kick from Jose Gomez taken from about 30 yards out was blasted just left of the frame just inside five minutes to play.
The loss drops Creighton to 0-4-0 all-time against the No. 1-ranked team in the coaches poll.
Creighton's last road loss in the regular-season came at Bradley on Oct. 28, 2006. The Bluejays had gone 15-0-7 in regular-season away matches since that defeat before Wednesday. Akron improved to 8-0-0 at home this season and 33-0-1 at home in its last 34 - the fourth longest home unbeaten streak in NCAA history.
The match was the final one of Creighton's four-game road swing, ending the trip 3-1-0. The Bluejays will now return home to wrap up the regular-season with three straight home contests inside Missouri Valley Conference play.
Next up for the Bluejays is new MVC affiliate member Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. SIUE is tied with Creighton atop the MVC standings with 12 points, although the Cougars are 4-1-0, compared to Creighton's 4-0-0 mark in conference play. The Jays and Cougars kick off at 7 pm at Morrison Stadium Saturday.
