COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's Casey Townsend scored in the 14th minute and the third-ranked Terrapins held off a hard charge by the second-ranked Creighton men's soccer team in the second half for a 1-0 win Friday night in front of 5,648 at Ludwig Field. The goal snapped Creighton's season-long shutout streak and the loss snapped the Bluejays' eight-game winning streak to start the season.
Maryland (10-0-1) entered the match as the top-ranked offense in the NCAA and quickly displayed its scoring abilities. In the 14th minute Patrick Mullins sent long ball forward for Townsend who was making a run toward the box. Bluejay goalkeeper Brian Holt attempted to reach the bouncing ball first, but coming outside of the 18-yard box he was unable to punch the ball away and the Terrapins' leading scorer settled the ball and got his shot around CU defender Eric Miller and into an open net for what proved to be the lone goal of the match. The goal was Townsend's team-leading 11th of the season.
The Terrapin attack continued throughout the first half, as Maryland's possession prevented many opportunities for the Bluejays. While Creighton managed a few scoring chances in the opening half, it was unable to log an official shot in the first 45 minutes, while Maryland unloaded nine shots in the opening frame.
Creighton (8-1-0), trailing at the half for the first time since its 2010 regular-season finale, came out far more aggressive in the second half. Kris Clark managed CU's first shot in the 48th minute, as his attempt landed on top of the Terp net. Just three minutes later, Dion Acoff ripped the first shot on goal of the match for the Jays, only to be denied by Maryland keeper Will Swaim.
Perhaps CU's best scoring chance of the night came when Clark slipped a nice touch pass to Ethan Finlay who beat his defender and had only Swaim to beat. Finlay's blast in the 54th minute beat a sliding Swaim high, but the shot sailed just over the cross bar.
Maryland appeared to have a chance midway through the second half when Mullins managed to stay onside but got behind the CU defense for a 1-v-1 chance with Holt. Holt sprinted to the top of the box to challenge Mullins and his aggressive play was so disruptive the Maryland forward sent a ball so wide it wasn't even recorded as a shot.
The Bluejays outshot Maryland 6-2 in the second half, as the Terrapins did not manage an official shot after the 49th minute. Andrew Ribeiro's blast with 10 minutes left proved dangerous, but it sailed high and marked CU's final shot in its first loss of the season.
The goal came at the 13:47 mark, snapping Creighton's scoreless streak to start the season at 752:12. The goal also ended Holt's school-record shutout streak at 753:34. The eight straight shutouts by Creighton were a school record.
Holt and Swaim each recorded two saves in the key non-conference match.
Creighton, which had its longest winning streak since 2000 snapped, will look to return to the win column when it continues its four-game road trip at Wisconsin on Wednesday night. The Bluejays and Badgers will kickoff at 7 pm in Madison.
NOTES: Creighton's 8-0-0 start was its best since the 1993 team started 19-0-0 ... CU had not won eight straight since the 2000 team won 11 in a row ... The Bluejays are now 1-1-0 against the top 25 this year ... CU is now 22-18-8 against the top 25 on the road all time and 56-42-10 all-time against the coaches top 25 ... CU is 11-9-1 against teams ranked in the coaches top-five all-time ... CU is now 18-2-7 in regular-season road matches since the start of the 2007 season, both losses have come to teams ranked in the top three (1-0 loss at No. 1 Akron in 2010) ... CU is now 1-3-1 all-time against Maryland, with all five meetings coming at College Park ... Creighton was the only remaining team in the NCAA which had not allowed a goal in 2011.
