
Volleyball Sweeps Drake, Improves to 3-0 in MVC Play

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball maintained its spot atop the Missouri Valley Conference standings with a 3-0 sweep of Drake on Saturday night before 1,017 fans at D.J. Sokol Arena. Scores of the Creighton's 10th straight home win over Drake were 25-23, 25-14, 25-11.
Creighton is now 11-2 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in the MVC, tied for first with three-time defending league champion Northern Iowa. Drake, coming off its first win of the season last night at Nebraska Omaha, dropped to 1-12 and is 0-3 in Valley action.
Creighton won a tight first set, 25-23, holding off a late Drake rally to move up 1-0 in the match. A 5-0 run with Ashley Jansen serving gave the Jays a comfortable 16-11 lead, but the Bulldogs would scratch back to knot the score at 20-all. CU would score four of the next five to earn three set points, only to have Drake fight off the first two. After a timeout, Leah McNary slammed her sixth kill of the set to give the Jays the 1-0 lead in the match. CU had 28 digs in the set, paced by seven each from Jansen and Brooke Boggs. Drake was led by six kills from Jdranka Tramosljanin.
Boggs got the Jays a comfortable lead to start the second set, serving the Jays to an 8-0 lead. The Bulldogs got no closer than four the rest of the way, as a block by Iowa natives Savannah Smith and Natalie Hackbarth sealed a 25-14 victory. CU hit .379 in the second set, led by three kills each from Kelli Browning and Melanie Jereb.
Creighton dominated the third set, scoring nine points on Browning's serve in a 25-11 romp. The Jays hit .500 in the third frame while holding DU to -.042 hitting. McNary had four kills in the final set while Smith had two blocks.
McNary topped CU with 12 kills on the night on career-high .579 hitting. Kate Elman led CU's defensive effort, finishing with 14 digs, and defensive specialists Boggs and Jansen had 12 and 10 digs, respectively. Heather Thorson, Megan Bober and Smith tied for the team-lead with three blocks in the match, while Bober added 31 assists and seven digs. CU hit .354 on the evening and finished with 45 kills, four aces, 54 digs and eight blocks.
Drake was paced by eight kills from Katie Dulek, who also hit a team-best .438 in 16 swings. Sarah Madden paced DU with 15 digs and served up a match-high three aces. The Bulldogs tallied 28 kills, six aces, 39 digs and three blocks for the match while hitting .073. Creighton has now won 21 straight sets at home over the Bulldogs.
Creighton will play its final non-conference match of the season on Tuesday with a 7 pm match against South Dakota. That contest will be televised on Cox 2 in Omaha and can be heard on KZOT (1180 AM).
