OMAHA, Neb. - With sophomore Fabian Herbers and junior Timo Pitter at the helm, the #8 Creighton men's soccer breezed past Cincinnati 3-0 on Sunday, Sept. 7.
The win lifted Creighton to 4-0-0 in 2014, while Cincinnati fell to 0-2-2.
Sunday's contest was a highly contested physical battle that produced a scoreless first half. Despite entering halftime deadlocked, the Bluejays controlled possession in the opening frame, tallying a shot edge of 7-2.
The second half remained physical but the Bluejays broke through in the 52nd minute as sophomore Fabian Herbers took a pass from junior Timo Pitter just outside the goal box, then beat Cincinnati keeper (Alex Gill) for an goal into an open net from 15 yards along the left side.
Pitter pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 68th minute via a shot just in front of the keeper, taking a pass from sophomore Lucas Stauffer for his first goal of the season. A short time later it was Herbers and Pitter hooking up again as Pitter centered a pass seamlessly to Herbers for an easy goal from eight yards out.
The feisty battle resulted in four combined yellow cards, two for each squad.
The Bluejays closed the match with an 18-5 edge on shots and a 9-1 lead in corners earned.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 13 as the Bluejays travel to Oklahoma to battle Tulsa at 7 p.m. (CT).
