Big Block Leads Volleyball Over Red Storm For 12th Straight Win

OMAHA, Neb. -- Maggie Baumert had 33 assists and a season-best nine blocks to lead a huge effort at the net in Creighton Volleyball's 12th straight win, a 3-0 sweep of St. John's on Sunday at D.J. Sokol Arena.
Scores of the match were 25-20, 27-25, 25-19.
Creighton improved to 17-7 overall and owns a two-game lead in the BIG EAST standings with an 11-0 mark. St. John's dropped to 15-11 and is 5-6 in league play.
St. John's scored the first four points of the match on Yaidy Santiago's serve, only to see the Bluejays answer with six consecutive points on Jess Bird's serve. After the Red Storm tied it at 6-all, Creighton used a seven-point blitz on Kate Elman's serve to catapult to a 13-6 lead. The Red Storm fought back, closing within one at 15-14, 16-15 and 17-16 before the Jays pulled away for the 25-20 victory. Creighton had five blocks in the first set, including three each from Baumert and Lauren Smith. SJU star Karin Palgutova became the Red Storm's all-time career kills leader in the frame, but she was blocked four times and was hampered by seven attack errors.
The turning point of the match came in the second set. Creighton fell behind early and trailed 20-16 when it used its second timeout. The Jays responded with the next three points to start a 4-1 run that tied the set at 21-all on a ball handling error from Red Storm setter Shawna-Lei Santos. Creighton kept up its momentum, taking a 22-21 lead when Taryn Kloth and Marysa Wilkinson rejected Palgutova. The teams traded eight straight sideouts, with the Red Storm surviving two set points, before a kill from Winters gave the Jays a 27-25 set two victory.
After Palgutova served St. John's to a 3-0 lead to open the third set, Elman served an ace as part of a 6-0 Bluejay flurry, and CU never trailed again. Baumert had four blocks in the last set, while Winters had five of her match-best 14 kills in the clinching set.
Overall, Creighton had more kills (44-30), aces (4-3) and blocks (14.5-4.0) than the Red Storm, as well as a better hitting percentage (.230 - .087). Both clubs had 42 digs.
Baumert finished with 33 assists, nine blocks and five kills on .500 hitting. Elman led all players witih 13 digs.
St. John's was paced by 10 kills from Palgutova, who also had 14 attack errors in 42 swings to hit -.095. Ten of her 14 attack errors were the direct result of a Creighton block. Delaney D'Amore dug a team-high nine balls for St. John's, while Danisa Moss had three blocks.
Creighton returns to the road for its next four matches, starting Friday at 6 pm with a match at second-place Villanova.
