WASHINGTON, D.C. --Â In a rematch between the BIG EAST's first- and second-place teams, No. 5 Creighton was edged, 2-1, in double overtime by No. 3 Georgetown on Sunday in the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship. The two teams met just 10 days ago in their respective regular-season finales, and Sunday's match bore an unfortunate resemblance for the Bluejays, as it, too, ended with Georgetown using late-match heroics to clinch a narrow, 2-1 win.
Unlike in the regular-season faceoff, the Bluejays (17-3-0) struck first on Sunday.
BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year and All-BIG EAST First Team selection, Timo Pitter, collected a pass from Ricardo Perez and beat the Georgetown keeper in the 17th minute to give Creighton the early, 1-0 advantage. With the goal, Pitter (31G, 20A), a senior from Oberschwarzach, Germany, moved past Ray Nikodem (1980-82) into eight-place among Creighton's all-time point scorers. He ranks fifth among active NCAA Division I players with 82 career points.
However, less than three minutes later, Georgetown responded with a senior of its own. All-BIG EAST First Team honoree Brandon Allen converted a header off of a pass from Keegan Rosenberry to tie the match at 1-1. With the goal, Allen matched Georgetown's all-time record for career goals with 49.
Pitter saw a pair of solid scoring opportunities in the 26th and 31st minutes, but couldn't break through. In the 31st minute, Fernando Castellanos set up Pitter, who unleashed a shot that appeared to be headed for the back of the net before senior defender Cole Seiler bailed out the Hoyas (15-2-2) with a team save.
The two teams battled to a 1-1 draw after one half of play, with each team recording eight shot attempts.
BIG EAST Co-Goalkeeper of the Year, Connor Sparrow, and the Bluejays' back line stepped up for Creighton in the second half to keep the Hoyas off the scoreboard.
In the 61st minute, following a Creighton yellow card that resulted in a Georgetown set piece, Sparrow pushed a shot attempt by Rosenberry up and over the crossbar to keep the match tied at 1-1. Eight minutes later, Creighton sophomore defender Lucas Stauffer made a leaping effort to break up David Witkoff's attempt at a header in the box.
Sparrow displayed his athleticism again in the 82nd minute when he jumped and fully-extended to make an impressive, fingertip save on a booming strike by Christopher Lema.
Sparrow, Creighton's all-time leader for goals against average (0.58) and goalkeeper win percentage (.787), collected four saves in the second period.
While Georgetown maintained just an 11-9 advantage on shots in the second half, the Hoyas applied pressure to Creighton's back line throughout the final few minutes of regulation.
Senior co-captain Eric DeJulio blocked an attempt by Arun Basuljevic in the box in the 85th minute, and, two minutes later, Georgetown's Brett Campbell sent a shot off the crossbar.
After clearing Georgetown's possession, Creighton ended the period with a pair of solid scoring opportunities, with Noah Franke sending a shot just wide of the left post and Pitter connecting on a header off of a pass from Fabian Herbers that was corralled by the Hoyas' keeper.
Knotted at 1-1 after 90 minutes of play, the Bluejays headed to extra time for the first time this season.
In the 92nd minute, Creighton nearly found its game-winning goal when Herbers fired a shot that struck the right post. Seconds later, the Georgetown goalkeeper made a diving, fingertip save on an attempt by Pitter.
Creighton controlled the majority of the first overtime period, outshooting the Hoyas, 5-0; however, Georgetown escaped the opening overtime session unscathed, forcing a second and final overtime period.
The Hoyas would make the most of the opportunity as Alex Muyl scored his fifth goal of the season with just 3:07 remaining to give Georgetown the narrow, 2-1 result.
Following the match, Sparrow, Perez, and Herbers were named to the All-Tournament Team.
With the BIG EAST tournament concluded, Creighton will await its seeding for the upcoming NCAA Men's Soccer Championship. The selection show for the national tournament will take place on Monday, Nov. 16 at 12:00 p.m. CST and can be viewed on NCAA.com.
