WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In a battle between the BIG EAST Conference's first- and second-place teams, third-ranked Creighton Men's Soccer was unable to put an end to No. 6 Georgetown's program-best 11-match win streak on Thursday as the Bluejays suffered a narrow, 2-1 road setback in their regular-season finale.
With the result, the Hoyas (13-2-2, 9-0-0 BIG EAST), who have not suffered a loss since falling to perennial power Akron on Sept. 4, clinched the BIG EAST regular-season title and secured the No. 1 seed and hosting rights in the upcoming BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship.
The Bluejays (16-2-0, 7-2-0 BIG EAST) will enter the league tournament as the No. 2 seed, and will host its semifinal match on Thursday, Nov. 12 at 7:00 p.m., inside Morrison Stadium in Omaha.
Georgetown's two goals game in the 17th and 83rd minutes, respectively.
Brett Campbell's 17th-minute score, assisted by Keegan Rosenberry and Brandon Allen, allowed the Hoyas to take a 1-0 lead into intermission.
However, less than 15 minutes into the second half, Creighton responded.
After moving into a midfield position, senior co-captain Vincent Keller found fellow Germany native, Fabian Herbers, for a 70th-minute equalizer.
The goal was Herbers' BIG EAST-leading 14th of the season. With 40 points on the year (14G, 12A), he is the nation's leading point scorer.
Senior goalkeeper Connor Sparrow made four saves in the match, including consecutive saves in the 58th and 59th minutes to keep the Bluejays' hopes alive.
However, Georgetown's offensive attack broke through in the 83rd minute when Rosenberry found fellow senior Cole Seiler for the eventual game-winning score.
Thursday's match was senior day for the Hoyas. Seniors accounted for four of Georgetown's six points on the day.
Creighton will begin postseason play on Thursday, Nov. 12 as the Bluejays host their BIG EAST semifinal match. Their opponent will be determined in quarterfinal play this coming weekend.
