
Women's Tennis Tops Missouri State 4-3 in Thriller

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team topped Missouri State 4-3 in a thriller at the Hanscom Tennis Center on Friday night.
Creighton (5-8) edged former conference foe Missouri State (2-6) in a close, competitive contest. CU never trailed but also never led by more than one point on the day. In the final match of the evening, the Jays won at No. 1 singles to come away with the one-point victory.
The Bluejays opened the evening by sweeping the doubles point. Sophomore Katherine Nelsen and freshman Natalie Miller began with a 6-0 victory on court three. Senior Jennie Hartjes and freshman Darby Rosette claimed the point on court one with a 6-3 win. Junior Sam Anderson and senior Liz Vermillion completed the sweep at the No. 2 slot at 6-4.
The Bears evened the match with a singles win on court three but Vermillion put the Jays back in front with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at position No. 6. MSU knotted the match at 2-2 following a straight set victory on court three.
Creighton inched ahead again after a three-set victory by Nelsen at position No. 2. Missouri State knotted the match for the final time at 3-3 after a three-set decision on court five.
That set up the winner-take-all match on court one. Senior Jennie Hartjes dropped the first set 6-4 but came back to win 7-5 in the second to force a deciding set. Hartjes went on to roll to a 6-1 victory in the third stanza and claim the team match point.
Creighton is back in action during its spring break trip to Florida beginning March 10.
