
Rally Comes Up Short as WBB Falls to South Dakota, 68-58

VERMILLION, S.D. - Down 16 points with 16 minutes remaining, the Creighton women's basketball team roared back with a bucket in the final two minutes but couldn't complete the comeback as Creighton fell, 68-58, in the opening round of the WNIT Tournament on Thursday, March 19. The loss ended Creighton's season at 17-14.
Creighton dug themselves an early hole, surrendering the first 10 points to the Coyotes. Creighton's first bucket came with 14:11 left in the first half on a mid-range jumper from senior Alexis Akin-Otiko.
The Bluejays fell behind 30-12 with 6:36 showing on the clock, but closed the half on a 12-6 run to go in at the break down 36-24.
South Dakota opened the second half much like it did the first, scoring five straight to push its lead to 41-24 (18:24). The Coyotes led by as much as 16 on two separate occasions, including 48-32 (14:59).
That was when the Bluejays found their stride. Creighton outscored South Dakota 15-4 over the next six minutes to make it a 52-47 game with 8:48 left.
Creighton pulled within three at 54-51 and again at 56-53, but each time South Dakota had the answer. The Bluejays final chance came in the closing minutes as a short jumper from Akin-Otiko pulled Creighton within a bucket at 61-58 (1:49).
Akin-Otiko led Creighton with 23 points in her final game as a Bluejay, while junior Marissa Janning had 11 points.
South Dakota got 21 points from Nicole Seekamp and 14 from Raeshel Contreras.
South Dakota, however, put the Bluejays away with a 7-0 run.
