Women?s Tennis Suffers Pair of Setbacks in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – The Creighton women's tennis team ended its regular season with a pair of BIG EAST setbacks to Xavier and Butler at the BU Outdoor Courts this weekend.
Creighton (10-11, 0-4 BIG EAST) won the doubles point against host Butler (8-16, 2-3 BIG EAST) but the Bulldogs claimed five singles victories to take the match at 5-2. Xavier (17-4, 6-1 BIG EAST) swept the Bluejays and Bulldogs to extend the Musketeers' win streak to 11 matches.
All three doubles matches were decided by one game against Butler. Senior Jennie Hartjes and freshman Darby Rosette teamed up for an 8-7 victory at no. 1 doubles. Junior Sam Anderson and senior Liz Vermillion beat the bulldogs by the same score on court two to give the Bluejays the doubles point.
Freshman Natalie Miller won her singles match at No. 4 singles in a tight three-set affair. Miller dropped the first set 6-3 but dominated the second stanza for a 6-1 win to force a deciding set. Miller claimed the point with a 6-4 decision in the final set.
Against Xavier, two Creighton singles matches went the distance. At No. 2 singles, sophomore Katherine Nelsen won a tight first set in a tiebreaker at 7-6 but Xavier's Alex Brinker claimed set two at 6-4 to force a deciding third-set superbreaker. Brinker held off Nelsen 10-4 to claim the team point.
On singles court three, Rosette dropped the first set 6-1 to Amina Ismail of Xavier but evened the match with a 6-4 win in the second stanza. But the third set went to Ismail by a score of 6-1.
Creighton returns to Indianapolis later this week to begin play at the 2015 BIG EAST Women's Tennis Championships beginning on Thursday.
