Volleyball Comes Up Short Against #11 Wisconsin

OMAHA, Neb. -- In a match that featured 25 ties and 14 lead changes, it was No. 11 Wisconsin that had the upper hand in the end during a 3-0 victory over Creighton Volleyball.
Scores of the match were 25-19, 25-21, 25-23.
Wisconsin improved to 2-0 in the Creighton Classic and 8-1 on the season, while Creighton is now 1-1 this weekend and 5-7 on the season. In the first match of the day Arkansas (9-2, 1-1 Creighton Classic) downed Kansas State (8-3, 0-2 Creighton Classic) in five sets.
All three sets were tightly-contested battles with the score tied past the midpoint before UW made the key plays to earn the victory.
The teams were even at 15-all in the first set before Amber MacDonald served up a 4-0 UW run. The Badgers would successfully side out down the stretch as Kelli Bates had six kills and three digs for UW, which also had five blocks to pick up the 25-19 win.
The second set was tied at 14 before UW embarked on a 9-3 burst that put the Badgers in position for a 2-0 lead at the break. All-American Lauren Carlini dished 13 assists and helped UW hit .262.
Creighton led 14-11 in the third set before Carlini authored a 4-0 run to put the Badgers back in front. Creighton would tie the score at 16, 19 and 22-all before ultimately winning it when Lauryn Gillis' tip found the donut and fell to the floor on match point. Gillis had four kills in the last set to overcome the homestanding Bluejays.
Lauren Smith had 10 kills and hit .529 on the afternoon for Creighton, while Jess Bird had a double-double with 10 kills and a team-best 13 digs. The Bluejays finished with 36 kills, 49 digs, seven blocks and two aces on .152 hitting.
Wisconsin was led by a dozen kills from Bates, while Taylor Morey upped a match-best 18 digs. The Badgers had 43 kills, three aces, 52 digs and 13 blocks on .197 hitting.
Creighton returns to action on Sunday at 2 pm when it hosts Kansas State to close out play at the Creighton Classic. Wisconsin looks to clinch the Creighton Classic title later on Saturday night when it meets Arkansas at 8 pm.
